Antique Swiss sterling silver pocket watch c.1888 featuring a hand painted pale pink enamel face with delicate gold detailing and Roman numerals. The front and the back of the watch has beautiful interlining stars alongside elaborate engravings on the back of the piece.
The watch has a good weight and it is tactile to touch the smooth scratch free glass on the front and the engravings on the body of the piece. Once the watch is wound up it has a lovely ticking noise.
The watch is in working order, to operate the watch, carefully hold down the button on the top of the piece (situated inside the ring), this will allow the back of the watch to click open, using the watch key wind up the watch and adjust the hands on the watch face. The front of the watch face can also be opened.
This piece is very decorative and could not be a replacement for a standard watch, it would work very well on a pocket watch chain for a wedding or as a statement necklace.
HALLMARKS
Three Standing Bears, 0.935, E (Watch) Lion (top ring)
The watch has a number of hallmarks, three bears and 0.935 indicating the piece is set in sterling silver, the three bear hallmark was introduced in 1888. The ring at the top of the watch has a lion indicating it is British sterling silver, most probably a later addition. This piece would have been designed to be exported to the UK because of the three bears, this indicated the silver weight was high enough for the British standards.
MEASUREMENTS
The watch measures 3.6cm / 1.4" (excluding the top ring) in diameter and 1.3cm / 0.5" in thickness.
